I’m sure that a lot of you, like me, have read other books by Stephanie Meyer, namely the Twilight Saga. About a year ago, I saw The Chemist at a library book sale. I knew that I had to pick it up to see what Meyer’s writing was like in a different genre.
Now, a year later, I’ve finally read it!
Characters
The main character element that confused me was the name switching in the beginning of the novel of our main character, Alex. (For the remainder of the review I’ll call her Alex since that’s what she goes by the most.)
Because this story is very action and spy based, we meet Alex with a different name. She goes on to change that name frequently throughout the first section of the story.
Other than that, I enjoyed reading from her perspective! It was fun to learn about the different precautions she had to set in place while running from the government!
The other two main characters in this story are brothers Daniel and Kevin. I really liked the dynamic that these two brought to the story, and the way that their two different personalities interacted!
Plot
I think the plot of this story was what I was most interested in when I first started reading.
I was intrigued to see how Meyer would go from writing about teenage vampires to government agents in their twenties. And I was a little bit surprised by how well it was pulled off!
All of the different traps and mechanisms that Alex puts together throughout the book are really interesting and clearly well thought out!
It was clear that Meyer did a lot of research in terms of weaponry. Sometimes it bogged down the story with lists of things that I didn’t understand, but at other times, it elevated the story with the description provided.
Final Thoughts on The Chemist
I ended up giving The Chemist by Stephanie Meyer 3.5 stars!
Overall, I enjoyed it, and while this won’t be an immediate re-read, I could see myself reading it again in the future!
